Steve Schapiro has been a Chicago area fundraiser and community relations executive for the past 15 years. Prior to that he held key leadership positions in management, sales, and marketing for the country’s largest provider of health information services to the insurance industry.
Schapiro operates his company, S&S Management Consulting Services, Inc. in north suburban Vernon Hills. His firm provides expertise in special event management, community & donor relations, sponsorship sales and fund development to a wide cross section of organizations and non-profits. Schapiro also volunteers on committees and boards for a number of worthwhile causes.
Prior to his work in the public sector, he played an integral role in growing National Insurance Examination Services of America (NIESA) into the preeminent privately held Health Information Services Company in the Midwest. As a result of Schapiro’s work and NIESA’s reputation for outstanding service and profitability, they became the target for acquisition. In 1992, the nation’s largest Health Information Services Company purchased NIESA and the company officially became the Chicago North branch of Portamedic. Schapiro applied the same formula for success at NIESA to his new role at Portamedic. This resulted in his rapid promotion from Branch to District Manager and a ranking of 5th place among 160 offices nationwide in both revenue and profitability.
Fueled by a desire to work more closely with the public and his lifelong passion for Parks and Recreation, Schapiro changed the course of his career. In 1999 he began his five-year tenure in Parks and Recreation. Schapiro produced award winning special events that received statewide recognition by the Illinois Park and Recreation Association (IPRA). He also developed a comprehensive sponsorship program while at the Wheeling Park District that resulted in double digit increases in sponsorship revenue and event attendance. Schapiro was very active in the business community and served for three years on the Board of Directors for the Wheeling/Prospect Heights Area Chamber of Commerce. While juggling the demands of work and family, he earned his Masters Degree in Parks and Recreation from Aurora University.
Following his tenure in Parks and Recreation, Schapiro continued to focus his career on assisting non-profits in raising awareness and funds. Examples of Schapiro’s creative thinking and fundraising ability include the innovative fundraising program “Driving What Matters”, in which several car dealers new to the region made a contribution to the United Way for each new vehicle sold. At Pathways Center in Glenview, Schapiro helped create a donor recognition program and secured media opportunities with such notables as CNN Headline News. At the Alzheimer’s Association, he recruited a “Who's Who” list of Fortune 100 and Fortune 500 companies for the first-ever Alzheimer’s Association Eldercare Workplace Advisory Council (EWAC). He also elevated awareness by securing speaking opportunities at prestigious professional association conferences and meetings.
Most recently, Schapiro is engaged in consultative sales and new business development for Community Health Charities, the leading workplace federation dedicated exclusively to health. Schapiro’s Midwest region includes Illinois, Michigan, Ohio, and Indiana. In this capacity, he provides employee engagement solutions to Fortune 100 & 500 companies that support their philanthropic, volunteer, and community engagement initiatives.
